Can I replace just my AC condenser without replacing the indoor coil

Technically yes, but your system works most efficiently when the condenser and evaporator coil are matched pairs designed to work together. An older indoor coil paired with a new condenser often results in lower cooling capacity, higher energy bills, and increased wear on the new compressor.

The matching problem

AC systems have a rated capacity in tons, typically two to five tons for residential homes. The outdoor condenser and indoor coil are sized and tuned to work as a pair. Mismatching them by generation or manufacturer creates flow and pressure imbalances. Your system may run continuously without reaching your set temperature, or shut down early due to pressure switches activating.

When partial replacement might work

If your indoor coil is relatively new, less than ten years old, and the same tonnage, a technician may be able to pair it with a new condenser using adapter kits. This should only be done with the original equipment specifications available and only if the compressor was not damaged by the coil failure. In most cases, replacing both components together costs little more than the condenser alone once labor is included, and you get a warranty covering both parts.
